Movie Party by Davis and Scout

This party was a delight to throw and the guests ended up having SO. MUCH. FUN!! My daughter loved feeling glamorous and having impressive elements like the red carpet and lemonade fountain!

Luckily, Scout’s birthday takes place during movie award season so we benefited from Target Dollar Spot and party stores having a nice selection of Oscar Party decor elements. This seems to happen every year now, so if you are planning to throw a movie-themed event, be on the lookout for those items popping up this time of year.

My husband was a big help with the red carpet stanchions that we created using pool noodles, large dowels, dollar store pie pans, and foam balls that were all spray painted. Here is a tutorial that give more detail if you want to make them yourself.

We served a sit down dinner in a formal manner with parents acting as waiters and the kids had fun playing along. While the service was semi-formal, the menu for ten-year-olds was very kid-friendly. We started with a veggie cup and a fruit platter that were offered at their seats. Then came pizza rolls, chicken tenders, and macaroni and cheese from Costco.

Dessert was served after the movie and was very easy to create. We purchased plain white cupcakes from the local grocery store. We then embellished the baking cups with popcorn stickers and added marshmallows cut and sprayed with food coloring to achieve a popcorn look. Cut mini marshmallows with food scissors both vertical and then horizontal through one end so it opens up like a popped piece of popcorn. Arrange all the cut marshmallows on a lined cookie sheet and spray them with yellow food spray. Once they dry, place these “popcorn pieces” onto the cupcake, attempting to cover the entire surface of the frosting. There are some fun printable cupcake cups here to complete the look. I ran out of time and just used some red and white cups that I had left from another event.

In the movie room we set up a fun Concession Stand and offered boxed candy choices in addition to the popcorn and beverages. The beverages were served in personalized insulated cups. We used the Silhouette transfer vinyl to add names and stars to each cup.

We used the Silhouette Cameo cutting machine to create some fun cut outs with black, white, and red paper. These were cute when displayed on a clothespin frame (that Cindy made for me years ago and sees a lot of use at parties and displays kid art when we are not planning a party). I also mounted some of these cut outs onto skewer sticks and stuck them into a tissue paper wrapped piece of square foam for a fun centerpiece.

The photo backdrop was simple for this party. We just hung black butcher paper to the wall and mounted the gold stars. The red carpet runner and stanchions completed the look and really excited the guests. We played paparazzi and made sure to get a photo of each girl, as well as lots of group shots. Each “swag bag” included a film strip photo frame and we made prints for each girl, which were included in their thank you card that could go into the frame.

Gold Stars These are similar to the ones I used on the photo backdrop and table. I could have made these with my Silhouette cutter, but since shiny craft paper can get pricey, it can be more cost effective to just buy them already made.
